In a remarkable event that unfolded on September 29th, 2023, seven young women in Uganda received temporary ordination as Buddhist nuns, marking a historic milestone in the growth and development of Buddhism in Africa. This momentous occasion took place at the Uganda Buddhist Centre (UBC), with six of the newly ordained nuns hailing from the center’s orphanage, who also attend the Buddhist Peace School. The seventh participant is a dedicated staff member at UBC.
The ordination of these seven young women is a significant step in the growth and development of Buddhism in Uganda and Africa as a whole. It highlights the adaptability and inclusivity of Buddhism as a religion that welcomes people from all walks of life and backgrounds.
The act of ordaining young women as nuns underscores the progressive and transformative nature of Buddhism in this region. It challenges traditional gender roles and opens the door for more women to take active roles in the growth and expansion of Buddhism in Africa. This can serve as an inspiration for young girls and women in Uganda to explore their spiritual side, enriching not only their own lives but also the lives of those they touch.
Furthermore, this ordination ceremony marks the largest group of nuns ever ordained at UBC since its inception in 2005. It demonstrates the growing interest in Buddhism among the local community and a heightened commitment to the teachings of compassion and mindfulness.
